Canine Good Citizen Prep Class
A practical real-world class for dogs working toward better public-life manners and Canine Good Citizen goals

About the CGC Prep Class
The Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Prep Class is a practical, real-world manners course that helps you and your dog build the skills that make life easier—calm greetings, loose-leash walking, polite handling, and reliable responses around distractions. The goal is everyday “good dog” behavior you can count on in public and at home. We’ll train toward the AKC’s 10-step Canine Good Citizen test which includes a three minute supervised separation.
On week 6, teams have the option to take the CGC test. Even if you’re not sure you’ll pass, the test is a helpful way to identify exactly what needs more practice—many dogs surprise their people. All breeds are welcome, including mixed breeds, and dogs who pass are eligible to receive an official certificate.
Why the Canine Good Citizen?
Good for dogs: CGC training is simply good for dogs—more practice, structure, and confidence in real life.
Work toward goals: If you like having a clear goal to work toward with your dog, CGC gives you a simple, motivating target.
Housing requirements: In some multi-unit buildings or rentals, CGC can help demonstrate responsible ownership and good manners.
Home-Owner Insurance: Many insurance companies now require the CGC certificate as proof of training for the family dog.
